Sutra Calligraphy
抄經

Sutra calligraphy is the practice of carefully writing Buddhist scriptures by hand as a form of meditation, devotion, and mindfulness. In Buddhism, a sutra is a sacred teaching of the Buddha, and copying these teachings in calligraphy is considered both a spiritual practice and an art form.

The purpose of sutra calligraphy is not only to create beautiful writing, but to train the mind to be calm, focused, and respectful. Each character is written slowly and with full attention, allowing the person to reflect on the meaning of the words while they write. Because of this, the practice is often compared to meditation in motion, where the body, breath, and mind work together.

Traditionally, copying sutras was a way to preserve the Buddha’s teachings before printing existed. Over time, it also became a devotional practice. Writing the sutras is believed to cultivate patience, wisdom, and good merit, because the person is spending time engaging with the Dharma in a sincere and mindful way.
